Boonsak places Olympic medal bet on himself
THE pundits may not recommend placing a bet on him but Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana reckons he can serve a medal surprise in the Beijing Olympics in August.
Boonsak’s confidence stems from the fact that two of the three medallists in the 2004 Athens Olympics — silver medallist Shon Seung Mo of South Korea and Indonesian bronze medallist Sony Dwi Kuncoro — were not expected to go that far.
In fact, the pundits had China’s Lin Dan or Chen Hong as the probable gold medallist but it was Indonesian ace Taufik Hidayat who tasted success.
Boonsak had a bird’s eye view of what transpired as he lost the bronze medal playoff to Sony, in what was a totally unexpected semi-final cast.
“Anything is possible in the Olympics. I don’t think anyone expected me to reach the semi-finals. I was still not strong then but I have the opportunity again,” said Boonsak.
“There are many good players this time around but I have the experience and my confidence level is high.
“The win over Lee Chong Wei yesterday (Thursday) is another reason for me to believe in myself as I chase a medal in the Olympics.”
The pundits are, again, picking Lin Dan, Bao Chunlai, Chong Wei, Lee Hyun Il and Taufik as the potential medal winners but Boonsak is ready to surprise again.
