Cycling: Double joy for Iranian rider Hossein
GENTING HIGHLANDS: Tabriz Petrochemical’s Hossein Askari won the sixth stage of the Tour of Malaysia held from Kuala Kubu Baru to Gohtong Jaya here, a distance of 122.2km, yesterday.
It was double joy for the Iranian when he was also crowned King of the Mountain (polka dot jersey) in the Tour after collecting eight points at the Gohtong Jaya climb zone yesterday and finishing with an overall total of 16 points. Le Tua’s Tonton Susanto, who finished the climbs with a total of eight points, was the runner-up.
Hossein clocked 3’10:11 ahead of David McCann (Giant Asia Racing) who did 3′10:21 while red jersey holder Tonton secured third place after posting 3′10:23.
“Today’s stage was very important for the polka dot jersey and the team overall, but Tonton and McCann give me a very tough time. However, I managed to pull away from them,” Hossein told reporters after the race.
Following Hossein’s victory yesterday, Tabriz Petrochemical are now leading the team category with 64′54:33 pushing Japan into second place while Le Tua are third.
Tonton, who retained the red jersey with total time 21′32:38 after yesterday’s stage, said: “I’m very pleased with today’s result because I managed to finish along with Asia’s best cyclist Hossein and last year’s polka-dot jersey winner, Ghader Mizbani.”
The sprint jersey remained with Anuar Manan, also from Le Tua and the winner of stages three, four and five, although the Terengganu-born did not pick up any points yesterday. – Bernama
