November 4, 2007
THE Powerman Malaysia 2007 duathlon, to be held in Seri Manjung, Perak on Sunday, will be the final race for the national athletes before the Dec 6-16 Korat Sea Games.
The duathlon, a run-bike-run event, will be making its debut in the 24th Sea Games and will be contested as a Category B sport.
Malaysia have strong medal prospects in both the men’s and women’s events with Shahrom Abdullah and Heidilee Mohamad ranked among the top 100 in the world, while Mariana Mohamad is ranked among the top 50 women duathletes worldwide. Triathlete Kimbeley Yap will also be competing.
The gruelling Powerman Malaysia 2007 duathlon race, which involves an 11km run, a 64km bike race and another 10km race to the finish line, will have three categories — individual long distance, Malakoff Power Relay and Malakoff Sprint Duathlon.
International Triathlon Union (ITU) duathlon men’s world champion and Powerman Malaysia 2006 first runner-up, Joerie Vansteelant, from Belgium and Powerman world ranked No 1 women’s duathlete and Powerman Malaysia defending champion, Erika Csomor from Hungary, will be back to lead the international field.
Malakoff Corporation Berhad’s Endie Tofil Mohd Tuffile said the company’s commitment towards the duathlon has contributed vastly towards its growing popularity. “This year the duathlon is a Sea Games sport for the first time, and Malaysia will be represented by a strong contingent. We are glad that Malakoff’s support has nurtured talent and interest in this sport to such a level,” said Endie Tofil.
Powerman Malaysia 2007, which carries total prize money of RM132,000, is sponsored by Malakoff Corporation Berhad, along with co-sponsors PowerBar and Brooks.
